No fewer than five persons were feared killed on Wednesday in a violent clash between the Abuja traders and okada riders at Dei Dei, a community in the Municipal Area Council (AMAC) of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Also, some buildings were reportedly set on fire during the crisis.
The cause of the clash intially was not clear but a resident of the area, who preferred not to be mentioned, said the clash was caused by an accident between an unidentified motorist and an Okada rider.
According to him, a truck driver crushed a passenger of an Okada man to death and trouble started when some people were blaming the Okada rider for the accident.
He said: “There is a serious breakdown of law and order in the community. Five persons have been killed. We have been calling for security intervention to no avail. We are really worried because the crisis is getting ethnic colouration.”
The traders first attacked the Okada ride, blaming him for the accident and death of his passenger, who is a trader in the area. The traders said the Okada man’s recklessness led to the death of the passenger.
“In a reprisal attack the okada rider’s colleagues mobilized themselves to the scene and the situation degenerated afterwards.”
