A student of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro in Ogun State, Samuel Adegoke, has reportedly committed suicide.
The deceased, a National Diploma II student of Electrical Electronic Engineering, reportedly drank a chemical substance and died after losing his school fees and that of his friend to gambling.
Last Friday, Samuel gambled on an online betting platform and lost all that he put out at stake.
It was learnt that he committed suicide on Monday when he could not face his friend, with whom he was sharing the same room.
The deceased was said to have secretly gained an access into his friend’s password through his phone and also used his school fee to bet but lost.
And when the school authorities warned that no student would be allowed to take exams without completing their registration and paying their school fees, Samuel resorted to committing suicide.
Before he died, he was reportedly rushed to the school clinic, where he was later referred to a specialist hospital outside the school campus in Ilaro.
He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Confirming the incident, the Deputy Registrar, Public Relations of the school, Sola Abiala, said the school quickly referred him to a specialist hospital to save his life, but he was pronounced dead shortly after he was admitted to the hospital.
Abiala, who spoke with newsmen, said: “The student, Samuel Adegoke, died on Monday morning while the exam was about to start. It was detected at the specialist hospital that he took a chemical substance.”
