The Osun State Police Command has confirmed arrest of two students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife allegedly involved in beating to death a final year student of the institution, Okolie Ahize.
Okolie, a 500 Level student of the Civil Engineering Department, on Monday was reportedly accused of phone theft and was mobbed by a group of students allegedly led by some union leaders of the university.
The victim gave up the ghost on Tuesday following the beating he received from the mob.
He was said to have been carried to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital dead.
The Police Public Relations Officer for Osun State Police Command, Yemisi Opalola Yemisi Opalola, who told newsmen on Wednesday that the suspects were student union leaders, said: “Investigation into the incident will continue and justice would be served.
Also, the OAU’s spokesman, Abiodun Olarewaju, said the university management handed over the suspects to the police to be investigated.
“The students are expected to adhere to the constitutional provisions and the university’s regulations rather than taking the law into their hands.
“The university will allow the police to investigate the matter. The university will not meddle in such a grievous offence. It bothers on the criminality of murder.”
Meanwhile, students in the Faculty of Technology, on Wednesday, staged a protest over the incident.
The protesters demanded justice for the late student.
