Gunmen have abducted three persons, conveying a dead woman to Abia State for burial.
The armed men on Wednesday reportedly ambushed the victims after intercepting their hearse conveying a corpse to Isuikwuato Community in the state.
A daughter of the deceased woman, another relation and the driver of the hearse were reportedly whisked into the bush after they had been kidnapped, a family member disclosed.
Pleading anonymity, the family member further disclosed that the victims coming from Abraka in Delta State were attacked around Umunneochi/ Ihube Okigwe axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.
He said: “The armed bandits ambushed the vehicle conveying the corpse and dragged all occupants out, abandoning the coffin in the vehicle on the road.
“The deceased is my uncle’s wife. The kidnappers whisked them, including the deceased woman’s daughter, another relation and the driver of the hearse into the bush.
“The deceased woman’s daughter later escaped from the kidnappers by providence but the driver and the other man are still being held captive.”
Expressing sadness over the incident, he said that the family had reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Isuikwuato.
He also said that the family had recovered the abandoned corpse and deposited it at the mortuary.
According to him: “We are in disarray. People bringing the corpse of my uncle’s wife today were Kidnapped at the notorious Umunneochi-Ihube Okigwe axis.
“They took away the victims into the bush. We have gone to pick the corpse and we have reported to the police. We want Government to come to our rescue.”
Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Abia State Police Command, Mr Geoffrey Ogbonna, said he was yet to be briefed.
