A gas explosion in Kano State on Tuesday morning killed no fewer than nine persons, according to the state government
Through the state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, the state government said the explosion was in the Sabon Gari area, not in a school as reported in the social media.
The commissioner, who said the cause of the explosion is yet not clear, disclosed that it happened at an animal feed store opposite a school along Aba Road, Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government.
Speaking with newsmen at the scene of the incident, he said: “The cause of the explosion and the extent of damage are yet to be officially ascertained. But an investigation has commenced to determine the cause, impact and measures to be taken.
“So, we are calling on the people in the state, particularly those living in the area where the incident occurred, to remain calm as the government in collaboration with relevant agencies are working on the matter.
“We promise to keep members of the public abreast of any development.”
Also, the Kano State Police Command had earlier said four persons died in the explosion.
The police debunked the claim that it was a bomb blast.
Meanwhile, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, (NEMA), Mustapha Habib Ahmed, who led his men to the site to coordinate rescue operations, said: “Nine dead bodies have been recovered so far from the rubble of a collapsed building. The incident was caused by an explosion from gas cylinders at Aba Road in Sabon Gari area of Kano State.”
