Residents of the Kaura village in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State have been thrown into mourning as a 25-year old man, Saminu Muntari, allegedly stabbed his 31-year old brother, Murtala Alhassan,, to death over a misunderstanding over firewood.
The suspect was said to have gone to his brother’s farmland and cut firewood without his consent and the situation later ended in a hot exchange of words.
A neighbor, Sunusi Nasiru, who witnessed the incident, said the suspect went to his brother’s house and stabbed him with a knife on the right side of his chest.
The neighbors, who would have been killed by the suspect, said he also used the same knife and stabbed him in his left hand while trying to apprehend him after he had stabbed his brother.
According to Sunusi, the victim died on the spot and the suspect fled the scene.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, Lawan Shiisu Adam, said: “The Police on 16/04/2022 at about 1500hrs received the report from the District Head of Kwalam, that, on the same date at about 1330hrs a 31-year old man, Murtala Alhassan, and his 25-year old brother, Saminu Muntari of Kaura village had a misunderstanding over firewood.
He said the incident happened after the suspect went to his brother’s farmland and cut firewood without his consent.
Shiisu said later at about 1400hrs the suspect went to the house of the victim and stabbed him with a knife at the right side of his chest and he died on the spot.
He said police rushed to the scene after receiving the report and the victim was taken to Ringim General for medical attention and was certified dead by a medical doctor.
He said the suspect had been arrested and an investigation is in progress.
