A hit-and-run truck driver has run over an unidentified United States returnee and killed him on Isheri-Igando Road in Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.
The incident reportedly happened around 7.00pm at the weekend when the victim, a middle-aged man, was said to have been knocked down by a fast moving car while he was crossing the busy road at the Diamond Estate after buying some items from a supermarket in the area.
As the man was knocked down by the car, the truck moving at top speed also ran over the victim and killed him on the spot.
A source in the area said the deceased just returned from the United States of America, where his children also stay.
Preferring anonymity, he said: “He returned from the United States not quite long to join his wife, who lives in the estate. He was preparing for a trip to Abuja the following day for an appointment.”
According to the source: “The man had just returned from a trip and was about to go into the estate where he lived when he asked his driver to stop.
“The driver parked close to the entrance of the estate gate while the man stepped out to purchase some items opposite the estate. After making the purchase, he crossed the first lane and stood on the median. By the time he was about to cross to the other side of the road, a vehicle knocked him down. It was after this that a truck coming from behind ran over him.”
The man was wearing a white t-shirt and a pair of jean trousers. He died on the spot and the truck driver sped off.
“The driver was still in the car waiting for him to return. It was when he discovered that he had taken a longer time than usual that he stepped out and saw people gathered around the spot. That was when he knew it was his employer’s corpse. His corpse was later taken to the mortuary.”
