Many worshippers of a church in Owo, Ondo State were feared killed on Sunday in an explosion suspected to be a bomb attack by some gunmen.
Hundreds of worshippers were said to be attending a Sunday mass service at the cathedral church, St. Francis Catholic Church, located behind the Olowo Palace in Owa-luwa Street in Owo when the unknown gunmen suspected to be terrorists attacked the religious centre.
An eye witness account revealed that more than fifty people were killed and many others critically injured by the armed terrorists.
The eyewitness, who pleaded annoymity, said apart from the explosion many worshippers that attempted to escape the scene were also sprayed with the terrorists’ bullets.
Many injured persons were reportedly rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo and other hospitals within the ancient town for treatment after the attack.
The Ondo State Police Command through its spokesperson, Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the attack.
The police promised to give detailed information of the attack soon.
