Ogun State Police operatives have arrested a 33-year old woman, Olaide Adekunle, accused of selling her 18-month old bab, Moridiat Rasaq, for N600,000 to settle a debt.
According to a statement by the Ogun State police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, the suspect was arrested after a her husband, Nureni Rasaq, reported to the police at Sango division of their missing child.
The statement read: “The husband told the police that his wife went to Lagos on March 15, 2023, with their baby girl Moridiat Rasaq but did not return home with her.
“When I asked about the baby, she the baby, she refused to tell to me about her whereabout despite all efforts to make her talk.
“Upon the report, the DPO of Sango division, CSP Dahiru Saleh, detailed his men to arrest the suspect.
“On interrogation, the she confessed that she has sold the baby to someone in Lagos at the rate of N600,000. She said she borrowed money from a microfinance bank, and when she was unable to pay back the money, the bank agents started dragging her and threatening to deal with her.
“Consequently, she ran to Lagos to hawk sachet water. In the course of selling sachet water, she had met a man who introduced her to a woman that eventually bought the child in Lagos.”
Oyeyemi said the acting Commissioner of Police, Babakura Muhammed, has ordered that the suspect be transfered to the State CIID for further investigation and possible recovery of the baby.
