Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested an alleged drug addict, Justice Anokam, for allegedly stabbing a pregnant woman to death.
The suspect was arrested by men from Iheagwa Division of the state command after using a dagger to kill the victim at Umuejechi Nekede autonomous community in Owerri West Local Government.
A resident of the community, Iyke Opara, who witnessed the incident, said the pregnant woman, an indigene of Ohaji/Egbema LGA of Imo, was a tenant in the community.
According to him, the victim had just came out of the popular Ama-Ato junction before she was accosted by the suspect.
Opara said the suspect has been terrorizing the community since he escaped from the April 2021 prison break in Imo.
He said: “The suspect is on drugs. He became enraged and descended on the woman with the dagger after asking her to give him money to eat and she shunned him.
“The woman told him to mind his business and that infuriated him. He removed a dagger he hid in his trousers and stabbed her in the stomach. The woman lost so much blood and was pronounced dead on getting to the hospital.
“On realizing what he had done, the suspect fled immediately but youths in the area pursued and apprehended, despite this several attempts attempts to stab them.
“But before he was lynched by irate youths, he was rescued by Nekede vigilantes and was handed over to the police. There was heavy protest by the youths infront of the Ihiagwa Police Division.”
