A commercial driver and father of four, Sodiq Rofiu, has been arrested by residents of Eleso community in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State for allegedly attempting to use his mother for money ritual.
The suspect was apprehended on Wednesday by the residents and handed over to Amotekun Corps in the area after he had allegedly smashed his mother’s head with a club.
It was learnt that the suspect had earlier in the day of the incident slaughtered a ram during a prayer session by some Islamic clerics, in which he reportedly invited his mother, who resides in Omi-Adio, some kilometers from his residence in the same council area to come and be part of the prayer.
The suspect, without the mother’s suspecting any foul play, lured his wife and children away from the house.
After inviting his mother into the room, he locked the door and attacked her with a club.
But the mother’s cry for help, alarmed the neighbours, who quickly came to her rescue.
The neighbours reportedly led the the victim, who was bleeding profusely, after forcing open the room’s door.
Asking not to be named, a neighbour, who witnessed the incident, said: “Sodiq wanted to take to his heels after discovering that residents had been alerted. But they gave him a hot chase and he was eventually apprehended and handed over to the law enforcement agents for investigation, while a small wooden box with white cloth, a sharp cutlass, as well as a club, were recovered from the place.”
Meanwhile, the suspect’s elder sister simply identified as Elizabeth, who was attending to the victim in the hospital, denied Sodiq planned to use their mother for money ritual.
She said the suspect had a history of mental illness and was treated for mental illness about 10 years ago.
The suspect is currently being in the custody of the Amotekun Corps in Omi-Adio.
