Gunmen has shot dead a police man at a security checkpoint in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
The armed men were said to killed the police inspector as they attacked on Monday night the checkpoint at the popular Union Bank Roundabout, very close to the Headquarters of the Ebonyi State Police Command.
It was gathered that the gunmen reportedly opened fire at the police men at the checkpoint, killing the police man and injuring two other officers.
The injured officers have been receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital, in the Abakaliki metropolis.
According to the Ebonyi State Police Command , the injured officers were receiving treatment in the hospital.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Onome Onovwakpoyeya, said: “On the 22/05/2023 at about 2030 hrs, the Operatives of the Command on Stop and Search duty at Union Bank roundabout, the area where banks are concentrated in the State Capital, engaged in a shootout with heavily armed hoodlums, whose mission were unknown in the area.
“Sadly, one of the Operatives paid the supreme price, while two others were injured and are receiving treatment in the hospital. Also, the hoodlums equally recorded casualties but were taken away.
“The Commissioner of Police, therefore, appeals to members of the public to report anyone seen with a bullet wound or soliciting for treatment for the same.”
