Armed men on Friday night attacked the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at LGEA Primary School Mgban, in Nyiev Council Ward of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, killing 34 people and injuring about 40 others in the facility.
Among the casualties were a pregnant woman and her son.
The gunmen reportedly stormed the camp around 10.00pm when the displaced people were about to go to sleep.
Confirming the incident, a Senior official of Guma Local Government, Christopher Waku, who had visited the camp to assess the level of attack, said casualties include the people displaced from their various ancestral homes and taking refuge at a classroom in LGEA Mgban.
Speaking with journalists, he said: “We recovered 24 corpses inside the classroom while the remaining 10 bodies were picked up along the road in the community. They were killed while running away.
“It happened yesterday (Friday), about few minutes after 9pm. Some armed men suspected to be herders came and attacked the community called Mgban; killed 34 persons while over 40 were severely injured and have been taking to the hospital. This killing can best be described as genocide.”
Also, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident newsmen.
She said she was yet to be properly briefed about the incident.
