A 29-year old electrical technician, Sunday Adebanyo, on Tuesday was convicted and sentenced to six months imprisonment for cheating a lottery agency of N37,000 by a Grade 1 Area Court in Shagari quarters, Abuja.
The convict, residing at Dutse Makaranta, Abuja, was sentenced by the judge, Sulyman Ola, after pleading guilty to the police charge.
However, Sulyman gave the convict an option of N10,000 fine but warned him to be of good behaviour.
During the court trial, the prosecutor, Chinedu Ogada, told the court that on April 26, one Atoji Ignatius, the owner of the lottery agency, reported the matter at the Dutse Alhaji Police Station.
According to him, the complainant informed the police that on April 25 at 9:00a.m., the convict came to his games house to play a virtual game and promised to pay after rounds of game.
The prosecutor further told the court that the convict dishonestly played virtual games to the tune of N37,000 and when the complainant demanded for money, he refused to pay.
Ogada, who said the offence contravened Sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code, also testified that the convict during police investigation made a confessional statement but said efforts to recover the money from him were abortive.
