Two final year students of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Wednesday evening were burnt to death in a fatal motor accident on Osogbo-Okinni Road.
Faith Adedoyin, a 500-level Accounting student and first son of the Majority Leader of Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Sanjo Adedoyin (Sanjay), was among the victims.
Also involved in the auto crash was the driver of the 18-seater bus conveying the students said to returning from an excursion to Erin-Ijesa Waterfall in Osun State.
The bus driver was said to have hit an Okada rider and his passenger and rather and stop to attend to them attempted to run away.
As the driver tried to escape from those pursuing him, he was said to have crashed the bus into a stationary tipper and caught fire at a sharp bend very close to the bridge at Ojutu area of Ilobu, Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
An eyewitness account revealed that the three victims were burnt to death on the spot and five others sustaining serious burnt injuries.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Osun State, Henry Benamaisia, told newsmen that the incident was caused by speed limit violation and loss of control.
Speaking through the Osun State Command of the FRSC, Agnes Ogungbemi, he said the injured victims were taken to the Uniosun Teaching Hospital in Osogbo and others to a private hospital in the town.
“Three mobile phones recovered at the scene had been handed over to the police,” he said.
Meanwhile, the LAUTECH ‘Sschool’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Lekan Fadeyi, has confirmed the accident, saying: “I can confirm to you that there was an accident while some students passed on but I have not gotten the details of their identities.”
Also, the President of the LAUTECH’s Students’ Union Government, Anuoluwa Adeboye, expressed sadness over the incident, explaining that the victims, who are final year student, organised an excursion to Erin-Ijesa Waterfall after their first-semester examination.
