Queen Elizabeth II of England is dead.
The 96-year old Queen Elizabeth died on Wednesday afternoon after over a year she lost her husband, Philip, who died at the age of 99 in April 2021.
In a statement by the Royal Family on Thursday, “the Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon (Wednesday.)
“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”
Born in Mayfair, London on April 21, 1926, Queen Elizabeth was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York. Her father was enthroned in 1936.
Meanwhile, her son, Prince Charles, who until Queen Elizabeth ‘s death the Prince of Wales, is now the King of England and he is expected to address the nation soon.
Queen Elizabeth’s children, alongside Prince William and Prince Harry, had kept company of the late queen at Balmoral after doctors expressed worrying concerns over her health.
But, she died hours later after being surrounded by her family.
Following the Queen’s death, Britain and her Commonwealth realms, will witness a ten-day period of mourning as millions of her subjects in the UK and abroad mourn her passing.
Prince Charles’ accession to the throne will mark a celebration of her historic 70-year reign that saw her witness her Platinum Jubilee this year.
The late Queen was Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
