Police officer shoots man watching football match dead in Ekiti hotel

A police officer has shot dead a man, Olaoye Abayomi, who was watching a football match in an hotel in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The victim was said to be watching a football match between Manchester United and West Brom around 9.30 pm on Saturday when the incident happened.

The police man in company of his other three colleagues reportedly opened fire on a group of young men watching a football match in Queens Court Hotel bar at Ologede area in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State.

He killed Abayomi, and injured, Idris Adebayo, who were drinking while watching the match with the gun shots.

It was gathered that the four police men came to the hotel with a police patrol van marked PF 600 – WSH.

On alighting from their vehicle, one of the police men allegedly shot towards the direction of the crowd and the bullet hit Abayomi in the stomach while his friend, Adebayo, also reportedly sustained bullet wound on the leg.

An eye witness account, revealed that Abayomi died on the spot but Adebayo was rushed to the hospital by other police officers at the scene.

But the officer that fired the shotswas said to have run away.

Narrating the incident to the newsmen on Sunday, an eye witness, Adetunji Olaniyi, said: “I went to watch a football match at Queens Court at Ologede area in Ado Ekiti when the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m.

“The police drove into the hotel as people were watching football and drinking. All of a sudden, we heard gunshots, and those of us watching football scattered in an attempt to run away for our lives.

“Before we could know what happened, we saw that police that entered have shot at people drinking, killing one person while the other was brutally injured on the leg.”

Also, another man, who witnessed the incident, Seun Olaifa, the atmosphere was calm and therefore was out of place for the police to shoot at peaceful citizens.

According to him: “They came in their usual way looking for who to raid and all we heard was gunshots and the perpetrator immediately ran leaving his colleagues who took the injured person to hospital.

“The police officer shot anyhow. There was no incident that warrants shooting. People were drinking and watching football.”

The police spokesperson, in Ekiti State, Sunday Abutu, said that the officer who fired the gunshot had been apprehended.

He told journalists that “the policeman who was involved in the fatal shooting at Queens Court Hotel for the reason which is still under investigation had been arrested, disarmed and detained for investigation and disciplinary action.
