Ogun DPO injured by rampaging secondary school students

Some rampaging secondary school students on Wednesday reportedly attacked and injured the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Obantoko Division, Alimeke Ignatius, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Ignatius and his men were reportedly attacked during a bloody fight between students of Egba Comprehensive High School and Asero High School in Asero area.

The DPO with his team was at the to quel the clash between the two schools when he was hit by stones on his head.

Before the police arrived the scene the students were said be hauling stones and other missiles at one another.

The students allegedly blocked the main road, causing tension among the residents of the area.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident, said Alimeke and some of his men, who raced to the scene of the incident to maintain law and order were injured by the students.

Oyeyemi said: “Students of Egba Comprehensive High School and Asero High School were engaged in a fight and the police from the Obantoko station were called to take charge of the situation.

“The DPO was hit by stones. The students were throwing stones and other objects at themselves during the fight.”

Meanwhile, Oyeyemi said the students could not be arrested for civil unrest, maintaining that “we cannot arrest the students because they are minors. We can only detain and counsel them, after which they will be released.”
