A man simply identified as Olorunda was killed on Wednesday by suspected cultists in Ilesa, Osun State.
The victim was said to have been caught in a rival cult clash and killed by a stray bullet from one of the cultists.
An eye witness account revealed that some armed men suspected to be cultists allegedly shot at a rival gang member at Irojo Area, Ilesa around 9.00 am but missed the target and killed the victim.
The two rival groups, Eye Cult from Irojo and Aye confraternity from Iwara, had first attacked each other on Tuesday evening and continued the supremacy battle on Wednesday.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a resident of the area the victim, who works at a sawmill in the area, went to buy cowpea for his breakfast when he was hit by the stray bullet.
He said: “Some cult members were after a renounced Eye Cult member in the area, who they shot and missed. The missed bullet went straight and hit an innocent person.”
Answering questions from newsmen, the spokesperson for Osun State Police Command, Mrs. Yemisi Opalola, confirmed that the victim was hit by a stray bullet.
However, she said that calm had been restored and assured that culprits would be apprehended and brought to justice.
She also said police has started investigation investigation into the incident.
Similar cult battles had led to the killing of one person at Oke-Ijetu Area in Osogbo on Saturday, and another killed on Monday at Sasa Area in Ibokun road, Osogbo.
