DSS arraigns man for defaming Osun Speaker

The Department of State Service (DSS) in Osun State on Monday arraigned a 48-year-old man, Sayo Joshua, before a state Magistrate Court for allegedly defaming the Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye.

The prosecutor, B.O. Nweke, told the court that the accused person committed the offence on June 19, 2020 in Osogbo, the state capital.

The prosecutor alleged that the accused person defamed the Speaker by publishing contemptuous pictures and words on a Facebook account, “Sayo Oki,” about Owoeye, knowing to be false.

According to him, the offence committed was contrary to Section 374(1)b & 374 and punishable under Section 375 of the Criminal Code Cap 34, Vol. 2 Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

However, the accused person pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The defense counsel, Ibraheem Imran, applied for bail for the accused person in the most liberal term.

In her ruling, the presiding judge, Magistrate Modupe Awodele, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The judge, therefore, adjourned the case till 14th of July, 2020 for hearing.
