Dare devil armed men have shot dead a police inspector Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The gunmen, who shot in police officer in the head in front of a popular hotel in the D/Line area of Port Harcourt, were also said to have carted his AK-47 rifle away.
A man, who witnessed the incident but declined to be identified, said the gunmen were in a Toyota Corolla car.
According to him: “It was around 2pm on Friday when we saw some men in a Grey 2005 Toyota Corolla car drove with speed and stopped in front of Landmark Hotel.
“Next thing, a policeman that was with his boss was shot by one of the men who came down from the vehicle and his gun was taken while the car zoomed off immediately.
“What we suspect was that the incident might be in connection with a kidnap attempt because the police man was guarding a very important person when they shot him.”
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, has confirmed the incident to journalists.
She said, in a statement, that investigation was ongoing to apprehend the fleeing gunmen.
According to her, the murderedofficer was attached to the Department of Operations, Yenegoa Bayelsa State Capital.
She disclosed that the officer’s remains have been deposited at the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt for autopsy, saying: “On 25/08/2023 at about 2030hrs information was received that one Inspector attached to the Department of Operations,Yenegoa Bayelsa State was fatally shot.
“He was shot on the head while excorting his principal around Landmark Hotel at Oroworukwo, near Olu Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt.
“His rifle and beret was carted away. Patrol teams were immediately mobilized to the scene.”
