Vaccination of Nigerians against the COVID-19 virus commenced in earnest on Friday in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria.
The vaccine had been assessed by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDC) and confirmed to be good for Nigerians’ health before the vaccination exercise.
It is now clear that Nigeria is set for the use the 3.924 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that arrived the country on March 2 through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The first person to be vaccinated was the Family Physician of the National Hospital, Abuja, Dr. Cyprian Ngon, and the second person was a Pathologist with the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Dr. Tahir Yunusa.
Ngon had been the Head of the COVID-19 Isolation Centre at National Hospital Abuja since February 2020 when the virus was first detected in Nigeria.
The third person was the National Hospital Abuja Family Physician at the Accident and Emergency unit, Dr. Nuru Samudeen.
Meanwhile, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government had launched a website for Nigerians to log on and register for the vaccination.
Nigerians are advised by the government to log on to the website on NPHCDC website.
To register for the COVID-19 vaccination, the health agency asked citizens to visit “our website — nphcda.gov.ng — and click on ‘COVID-19 vaccination e-registration.”
