Four policemen deployed to monitor Saturday senatorial bye-election in Bayelsa State have reportedly drowned in a river.
The policemen and others were said to be going to Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, where they were assigned to monitor the poll when theit boat capsized.
Some of those in the boat were rescued but the four policemen were not lucky.
According to the spokesperson the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, the boat in which the victims were traveling capsized on their way to Oporoma, headquarters of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.
he police were yet to ascertain the number of cops involved in the accident.
The PPRO said the police command was monitoring the incident, adding that from the information at the police disposal, there was a boat mishap and some of policemen were declared missing and some rescued.
He clarified that it was not an attack, but a boat mishap.
Butswat said the police could not say that someone was dead because it would be too hasty to say so, as some might have swimmed to safety.
