240 inmates escape from Kogi prison as gunmen attack facility, killing 3 guards

No fewer than 240 inmates of the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Kabba, Kogi State, had escaped as gunmen attacked the facility on Sunday night.

A soldier and two police men in the security guard of the facility were reportedly killed during the attack.

It was learnt that total figure of the inmates in the custody at the facility before the attack were 294 out of which 224 were pre-trial detainees and 70 convicted inmates.

In a statement by the spokesman for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Mr. Francis Enobore, who confirmed the incident, said a heavily armed gang attacked the facility and engaged the guards on duty in a fierce gun battle.

According to him, the NCoS Comptroller-Generala, Haliru Nababa, has ordered that those escaped should be recaptured and investigation into the incident be carried out.

Enobore appealed to members of the public to give useful information to security operatives to facilitate recapturing of the escaped inmates.
